UCT was wild for me, it was my first time interacting with whiteness and wealth in close proximity, it was weird because I was in class with people who have domestic workers at home and I come in as a son of a domestic worker and that shock is one of the reasons why I failed.
Lmao I used to think all black people are poor until I got to varsity and saw gore ha a maan, malapa ga a lekane. It’s so weird when this gap, in schooling, wealth, privilege and capital is not taken into account when grading students or giving support or being inclusive
Once went to a braai at former varsity mates house in leafy suburb in Johannesburg & to say I wasn’t shocked at the violent opulence of wealth and privilege by a fellow black sister I’d be lying. Boom house is huge, boom picture of CEO dad with Bill Gates in the Lounge. Like????
Don’t worry about me beloveds, my story has a happy ending and I am instrument used by the universe to show the power of resilience because I did appeal and got back and navigated the very exclusionary system pre RMF which was a very suffocating experience but: https://twitter.com/ChatWithChauke/status/1228612019580014593
Lmao I used to get emails from the former Vice Chancellor asking me how I improved so drastically, I failed dismally in first year even getting negative marks for mathematics, I was on the radar cause it was shocking to them and they are aware that the system wasn’t for us
I tweeted about this before and faux middle class blacks combusted in my mentions, losing their shit and calling me names: https://twitter.com/ChatWithChauke/status/1273994843728076800
