My tweet reached 100 likes so I’ve to do it. Listening to all Merzbow projects available on Spotify. 107 projects. Wish me luck (retweets appreciated). Let’s go.

THREAD:
1/107: Life Performance

This project has some drums, melodies and vocal samples at the beginning so it’s not just noise. It has also rhythm so it’s "kinda" entertaining sometimes. But honestly, the far you go on the record the worse it gets. No more rhythm, no more melodies.
2/107: Antimonument

This project is very different than the first one because it’s not a harsh noise project. It’s way more industrial and also uses some samples and even drums in the last track. The 4th track is truly a piece of contemporary art in my opinion.
3/107: Ecobondage

This project has a similarity with the last one, it’s way more industrial than noisy. There are animal sounds/screams at the beginning and then it becomes more brutal. Sometimes it even looks like an Apocalyptic Dark Ambient record. Stunning.
4/107: Cloud Cock Oo Grand

By far the most extreme Merzbow record I heard yet. This albums is mixed with harsh noise, industrial sounds, distorted samples, dark ambient atmosphere and other noisy things who makes it a huge dystopian hubbub.
5/107: Rainbow Electronics

This album is the first 1-track project from Merzbow I listened (he has many others). It sounds sometimes chaotic, sometimes minimalistic, sometimes ambient, sometimes industrial so I’m glad this album is not just a long boring track.
6/107: Venereology

Ok so first listen to this relatively famous Merzbow record. Absolutely infernal and it’s purely harsh noise. Way more extreme than his previous records. I even saw some people saying that this album helps them fall ASLEEP (???). Couldn’t be me at all.
7/107: Noisembryo

This album sonds like a noise tempest. I feel like it’s even more brutal than Venereology. It’s really hard to review this album because it’s just harsh noise for one hour. But I easily can say that it was a painful listen.
8/107: Pulse Demon

Undoubtedly the most famous Merzbow record and one of the most chaotic. It’s interesting because I think I like this album more than the previous two (Venereology and Noisembryo), it’s way more energetic and sometimes it kinda slaps. Still hard to listen tho.
9/107: Spiral Honey

When the album starts, it feels like you're stepping into a black hole. All of a sudden a deafening din accompanied by strange noises. Then it evolves like you’re lost in that noisy universe.
If Cosmic Horror was a harsh noise album, this would be this one.
10/107: Brisbane • Tokyo Interlace (with John Watermann)

Between noisy and quiet moments, this collaboration between Merzbow and Australian composer John Watermann is very varied. More melodic than other Merzbow works, this project is much more clean. Interesting listen.
11/107: Age Of 369 / Chant 2

The atmosphere at the start of Age Of 369 is really creepy with several screams in the background and then it becomes more noisy with a few samples as the album goes. I feel like Chant 2 uses more samples but both parts are still quite similar.
12/107: Oersted

This album might be the most brutal and chaotic I’ve ever heard so it’s really hard for me to review it. I hear growls and crackling fire in the background so if I could compare it to something it would be like being immersed in the flames of hell.
13/107: Electric Salad

Interesting record. It has a main track who’s 60 minutes long and this track is very complete. Minimalist, electric and noisy are the words I would use to describe this album. Merzbow also uses samples and I always love when he does that. Kinda cool.
14/107: Mercurated

Each tracks sounds different in this album. Electricwatersheep sounds sometimes like an airplane taking off, Tree of Kusukusu sounds way more mechanical, Freezedgrume is nothing special and Sufractant starts way more airy and even sometimes minimalistic.
15/107: Pinkream

This album starts off with a fairly high constant sound and then it becomes noisy and electric. Less brutal than other Merzbow records, I like this one much. I don’t have a lot to say about it but I always like when Merzbow put more than 4 tracks in a project.
16/107: Hybrid Noisebloom

I can’t put words to describe this album but it‘s genuinely painful, a headache masterpiece. It’s so noisy and messy, it’s just unbelievable. That was interesting to listen to and it’s probably one of the best Merzbow record but what the hell was that.
17/107: Tauromachine

I don’t have much to say about it. Common Merzbow album with a lot of industrial sounds (not just noise). To be honest, after hearing Hybrid Noisebloom, this album is kinda boring. It’s shorter than other Merzbow records in general too (51 min)
18/107: New Takamagahara

Honestly this album was pretty boring, nothing innovative. It’s easier to listen to because it’s not as violent as other Merzbow records like Venereology or Hybrid Noisebloom but still not interesting.
19/107: Psychorazer

This album was nothing really special. A bit more progressive in his construction in my opinion, especially in the third (and last) track but otherwise not so much interesting. Not my kind of Merzbow projects, pretty boring.
20/107: Maschinenstil

Way more interesting than the last one. It’s more messy, more "alive". There are pan effects (especially at the beginning), melodic appearances, repeated figures, drums (especially in second track) etc... which give the album a captivating side.
21/107: Vibractance

This album was more like an Ambient / Drone record than a Harsh Noise record. The second track (Sonar) destroyed my ears (in a bad way) because there were a really high pitched noise who was really uncomfortable (had to put the sound down lmao). Not for me.
22/107: Aqua Necromancer

Honestly it gots some interesting things on it like drums parts and melodic elements but these tend to get boring the longer time goes on in the album. I think this album is more accessible than his other projects (not by much tho).
23/107: Tentacle

Most boring Merzbow album I’ve heard until now. Nothing surprising nor interesting in this project so I’m a little bit disappointed. Stormy Wednesday is so long and has literally nothing new. Probably his worst record until now (in my opinion).
24/107: Door Open at 8am

This album has a pretty boring start but after that he has some interesting things on it. Electronic (IDM, Minimal Techno) boucles, drum breaks, Jazz parts. All of those things makes the record quite interesting but not enough for the album to be great.
25/107: Collapse 12 Floors

A minimalistic project with a good atmosphere, some samples are nice (especially in Kareha). I think the cover looks exactly like the album. It sounds industrial, raw but in a reduced dimension. Was a little bit disappointed by title track tho.
26/107: For Ute / Tower of Ghost (with AMM)

In this Split in collaboration with AMM, both artists have done one of the both tracks. AMM track is Industrial Ambient and Merzbow track Harsh Noise Ambient. Nothing incredible but nice to see other artists on Merzbow projects.
27/107: Blues Maggots

I don’t understand many things about this. Why is the name of the album Blues Maggots when its written Blues Maggot and the cover? Why is there a Part 1 but only one song? I don’t know. Speaking about the music, it has some electric guitars so it’s cool.
28/107: Hard Lovin’ Man

A long atmospheric and ambient noise record. A thick layer of noise who sounds almost like drone metal. A nice experience I guess even tho it’s not really awesome. Yeah, decent.
29/107: Puroland

Cool dark and noisy ambient record. Great atmosphere at the beginning but it gets a little bit boring at the end. The ambient sound at the start of the album remind me of the effect tpbaby2000 usually use on his Tiktoks so it’s kinda funny lmao.
30/107: Dharma

A galactic and abstract Harsh Noise record who was really captivating in the first three tracks. These being chaotic, strange and really interesting to listen to. The last track is way more ambient. It sounds like a mix between Dark Ambient and Harsh Noise.
31/107: Amlux

I love this side of Merzbow where he does a mix of Dark Ambient and Noise music. The atmosphere is just perfect on this album and the closing track is so captivating. I immerse myself into his obscure universe in this project and I think it’s absolutely stunning.
32/107: Fantail

Not gonna lie, this album was pretty boring... It doesn’t have enough interesting substance to be captivating as a whole. Last track is unnecessary too long (even for a Live track) and it gets really boring at the end. Wouldn’t recommend this one.
33/107: Ikebukuro Dada

I think I liked this album. The dark atmosphere is well setting up at the beginning and it has some interesting ideas. On the other hand it fell off a little bit at the end but it’s still good.
34/108: A Taste of Merzbow

This album got interesting textures and ideas in general. Third track is a bit boring but overall this album is good, especially the start.

(Yeah it’s no more 107 albums but 108, Merzbow dropped a new album last friday...)
35/108: Live at Molde International Jazz Festival (with Jazzkammer)

A very minimalistic and repetitive project with a nice atmosphere. The alchemy between these two artists matches in my opinion but lacks a little bit in interest and it gets kinda boring at the end.
36/108: Frog+

A long, very long project from Merzbow and despite its lenght, there were only a few interesting things to remember. Definitely not worth checking out in my opinion. A lot of Merzbow projects are way better and shorter. Yeah I wasted 1h32 of my life. (I’m rough Ik)
37/108: Live CBGB’s NYC (with Alec Empire)

In this collaborative live album, Alec Empire and Merzbow made a rough, dark and brutal piece of music between Breakcore and Noise. This combination is very entertaining and makes this project a hidden gem in Merzbow discography.
38/108: V (with Pan Sonic)

Looks way more like Ambient than Harsh Noise, this project has space textures and creepy atmospheres. Although being quite long, this album isn’t boring and the chemistry between Pan Sonic and Merzbow matches very well.
39/108: Live Magnetism

Wasn’t feeling this at all. Just a long and boring noisy ambient track. It doesn’t evolve enough and even the sound textures are not really interesting. Disappointed by this one.
40/108: Tamago

Nothing much to say about this project except for the 5th track "Tamago". This one is really weird because he has litterally chickens sounds in it and some electric guitars passages. This track is, in my opinion, the only real highlight of this project.
41/108: Offering

I really loved the sound textures at the start of this project. The rhythm on the first track is good and the airy atmosphere is really well done. Unfortunately the second track is much more boring and I didn’t got the appeal for it at all.
42/108: Multiplication (with John Wiese)

This collab album is one of the most raw album I’ve listened from Merzbow in a long time. It reminds me of albums like Venereology or Noisembryo who are pure Harsh Noise records. Not my cup of tea to be honest.
43/108: Dust of Dreams

I have literally nothing to say about it plus I’m tired. So if you want a decent Ambient Noise album, go listen to it but it’s honestly not really good.
44/108: Scene

A cinematic project with a good mix of Noise and Ambient. It lacks a little bit in uniqueness in his conception and his sound design. Not that boring nor interesting, this project is easily forgettable.
45/108: Space Metalizer

I've gotten to the point where every new Merzbow album I listen to feels like another. So I have less and less to say. This album, although longer than average, is not an exception. Common Merzbow project with a mix of Ambient, Noise and Industrial.
46/108: Zophorus

Man I just don’t want to review Merzbow anymore if they all sounds the same. I didn’t hate neither love this one so I don’t know what I can say... WAIT I KNOW! The cover art is great, I love it! Yeah that’s all lmao.
47/108: Magnesia Nova

My mood during my listen varied between 😴 and 😑🔫. Yeah I do my reviews like that now.
48/108: Green Wheels

Almost got a struggle reading and writing those tracks titles... Why Merzbow? WHY???
49/108: Arijigoku

This project is just raw and chaotic. The drums on "Pt. 2" are energetic and groovy asf. Otherwise it’s just common Harsh Noise by Merzbow.
50/108: Eucalypse

ok.
51/108: Anicca

A raw and messy Merzbow project with some fucking banger drums on the first track. Not boring at all, it sounds like a tempest. Second and third track are way more atmospheric. I think it’s a decent album.
52/108: Andre Sider Af Sonic Youth (Syr 8) [with Sonic Youth & Mats Gustaffson]

Yes. Yes. Yes. That’s the kind of stuff I want to hear from Merzbow. The alchemy between these musicians is really great and creates an Avant-Garde record absolutely stunning.
53/108: Protean World

Except the great drums, nothing is really outstanding on this album. The project is still a short good dose of energy.
54/108: Hiranya - LP

As the last one, this Merzbow project mix Harsh Noise and furious drums. Pretty alright I guess.
55/108: Another Merzbow Records

Haven’t specified in the left pic but this album is actually a TRIPLE album separated into 7, 7 and 5 songs. So yes it’s long, very long. It’s basically all Merzbow compiled in one and unique project. Won’t be returning to it lmao.
56/108: Live at Henie Onstad Art Centre

Maybe one of my least favorite live album from Merzbow. This project is just too repetitive and gets really boring.
57/108: Ducks : Live in NYC (with Balázs Pándi)

I love when drums are used in Merzbow projects so it’s even better when it’s a professional drummer who plays them and not Merzbow himself and the whole drum solo track ("4") is a really good performance from Balázs Pándi.
58/108: Victoriaville mai 2011 (with Richard Pinhas & Wolf Eyes)

Damn this covert art is ugly but this airy Dark Ambient record with some Free Jazz elements is still good. This collaboration between these three musicians is good, even tho I don’t hear Merzbow influence a lot.
59/108: Kibako

Damn, another very very long Merzbow album. This one is interesting, the atmosphere is very well settled. Disturbing and intense, this album is probably one of my favorite from Merzbow.
60/108: Mer Mar (with Marhaug)

Nice airy atmospheric collab project.
61/108: Split (with Bastard Noise)

Yeah hem okay, this is just a fucking brutal noise album. I don’t get the point for Merzbow of making a collab project with an Harsh Noise band. It’s cool when it’s with a saxophonist or a drummer for exemple but with an Harsh Noise band? No.
62/108: Suzume: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 1

I think I will love this series of projects because this one was good. Great drums and the whole energy of it is captivating. That’s the Merzbow I like.
63/108: Fukurou: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 2

Pretty similar to the last one, it’s as good as his predecessor. This series is still good. 👍🏻
64/108: Yurikamome: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 3

Cooooooooooool. Drums are fire 🔥
65/108: Karasu: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 4

Not as good as the previous three imo but still decent.
66/108: Uzura: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 5

The start is pretty unoriginal but the end is weird as fuck lmao it sounds so funny.
67/108: Kamo: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 6

Nice project imo.
68/108: Kujakubato: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 7

Yeah I’m late asf on my program bc I should have listened to this album Friday but didn’t have much time this weekend and wanted to listen to something else. Well, y’all probably don’t care about my life lmao. Album is decent tho.
69/108: Kokuchou: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 8

Didn’t talk a lot about the last one which was pretty chill but with a good energy, this one is much more atmospheric at first and then way more brutal, chaotic and noisy. The last track is really epic with a great cinematic atmosphere.
70/108: Hiyodori: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 9

I’m pretty indifferent to that one to be honest. "Across the Earth" is by far my favorite track.
71/108: Niwatori: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 10

Third track is cool, the first two are very similar to what I have already heard on this series.
72/108: Shirasagi: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 11

get get get got got got, drums on this album are a bop
73/108: Tsubame: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 12

Very similar to the other parts, and still like the drums. Some sounds are interesting on this album so I think it’s better than a lot of parts off this series.
74/108: Chabo: 13 Japanese Birds Pt. 13

Finally the last album of this series, and it’s only made up of one single 51 minutes track. There are no drums on this album so it’s kinda surprising because every single 13 Japanese Birds project before this one have some.
75/108: Partikel III (with Nordvargr)

A pretty good Dark Ambient record where the harsh noise influence isn’t dominant. The dark and airy atmosphere is much more highlighted than the harshness of Merzbow music.
76/108: No Closure (with Scott Miller & Lee Camfield)

Way more unique and melodic than the common Merzbow record, this collaboration project with Scott Miller and Lee Camfield mix Ambient Folk and Noise with some Drone and Black Metal influences. For sure a hidden gem.
77/108: Minazo Vol. 1

Got some interesting textures. Decent album.
78/108: Merzbuta

Overall the project isn’t really special and a bit boring but I liked Track 4, it has a pretty good rhythm and a nice atmosphere.
79/108: Merzbeat

Finally listened to this quite famous Merzbow record. One of the first time Merzbow uses electronic drums in his songs (he already used acoustic drums several times). I think it’s a good project but it’s by far my favorite from him.
80/108: Ikebana: Merzbow’s Amlux Rebuilt, Reused and Recycled

So this project is basically a 2h20 double album of remixes based of Amlux by Merzbow (one of the few albums I actually like from him). It’s really diversified so it’s interesting but it’s waaaaaaay too long.
81/108: Dolphin Sonar

Just uninteresting.
82/108: Merzbuddha

A very atmospheric ambient noise album that is kinda relaxing. If you like studying to harsh noise it’s pretty good album to do that lmao. And just another thing... Gaddamn the cover is awfuuuuul, wtf Merzbow.
83/108: Cuts (with Mats Gustafsson & Balász Pándi)

A really messy project with noise, drums and saxophone who goes really crazy. A really extreme album.
84/108: Nezumimochi

Pretty repetitive and ambient noise stuff with some melodic elements. This project is alright.
85/108: MERZXIU (with Xiu Xiu)

I honestly expected something better from a collaboration between Merzbow and Xiu Xiu. Got some interesting things but I was still disappointed.
86/108: Mort Aux Vaches: Locomotive Breath

Alright.
87/108: Sister Fawn (with Full Of Hell)

The whole atmosphere is crazy, really dark and weighty. Crumbling Ore is for sure the main highlight of this project, with a mix of Harsh Noise, Dark Ambient and Dark Jazz. A pretty stunning record.
88/108: Gensho (with Boris)

Disc 1 is purely Sludge Metal and I don’t really see Merzbow implication in it. Still a pretty good performance from Boris (as usual). Disc 2 is where we really see Merzbow music, way more raw and noisy.
89/108: Atsusaku (with Gareth Davis)

A really harsh project with a galactic airy but brutal atmosphere. Not really what I like to listen to from Merzbow.
90/109: An Untroublesome Defencelessness (with Keiji Haino & Balázs Pándi)

I really like this kind of projects where there’s a great alchemy between the musicians. Merzbow for the noise, Pándi with the drums and Haino for the guitar.

(He dropped another project so it’s 109 now)
91/109: Strange City (with Sun Ra)

The long awaited crossover... Harsh Noise x Free Jazz, and it sounds exactly how you can imagine it (maybe it’s still more Noisy than Jazzy tho)
92/109: Live at Fac251 (with Balázs Pándi)

Merzbow and Balázs Pándi collaborate pretty often so a live album from them isn’t surprising at all. Noise and drums, the usual recipe of these two artists made a record that sounds obviously like their other joints. Nothing surprising.
93/109: Live At Radio 100

Pretty good live album with some (what I guess) Folk samples. Kinda cool.
94/109: Aodron

Kinda liked the aesthetic of the sound at the beginning of the album but the end is just classic Merzbow. Correct album.
95/109: Muen

Generic Merzbow project.
96/109: Alessandro Cortini/Merzbow (with Alessandro Cortini)

Got some interesting textures and sounds but it’s quite long. Decent collaboration album with a sound that isn’t as harsh as common Merzbow.
97/109: Achromatic (with Hexa)

A cool Dark Ambient/Noise record. I really liked the atmosphere, Merzbow and Hexa did a great job on this one.
98/109: A Perfect Pain (with Genesis P-Orridge)

A very long and unsettling album with a outstanding vocal performance from Genesis, that is really disturbing and dive us into a unique dark world. It was a really cool experience and I definitely didn’t waste my time.
99/109: Monoakuma

A one-track album with a galactic noisy sound. Definitely not the most entertaining project from him.
100/109: Venereology (Remastered)

Revisiting a Merzbow album I’ve heard 2 months ago is quite a thing. I honestly hated Venereology when I first heard it but now that I’ve heard a lot of Merzbow projects, I can’t deny it, it’s one of his craziest (and noisiest) album.
101/109: Noise Mass

Yeah it’s indeed a noise mass, but it isn’t hit as hard as albums like Venereology, Hybrid Noisebloom, Noisembryo or Pulse Demon. It lacks interest because of that in my opinion.
102/109: Become the Discovered, Not the Discoverer (with Keiji Haino & Balázs Pandi)

Pretty good album from these three artists, chemistry between them is great. Not an outstanding project but still decent in Merzbow discography.
103/109: Pulse Demon (Remastered)

What a pleasure to listen to the best piece of music ever created. No but seriously this album bangs, sounds are crazy and this remastered version is definitely better than the original. Do I need help?
104/109: Dead Lotus

A really short project but also a unnecessary one, I don’t see any interest in it besides the last track. Textures aren’t that good and are too much brutal. The last track is although very different and have a cool synth sound, original for a Merzbow project.
105/109: Broken Landscapes (with Gareth Davis)

Although Dogger Bank wasn’t that interesting, Yabata Frog have really weird and enigmatic textures. Inland Empire is, on the other hand, way more ambient. Liked the variety on this project.
106/109: StereoAkuma

Noisy and messy, StereoAkuma didn’t hit really hard but it’s a huge wall of noise. It sounds massive, heavy but fortunately not static.
107/109: EXD

Ok ok ok, decent project with a lot of movement and variations.
108/109: Cuts Open (with Mats Gustafsson & Balázs Pándi)

A long project with many minimalist moments with only few sounds. Far from the huge noisy thing created by Merzbow, Mats and Balázs in Cuts, Cuts Open will although sounds heavier and messier at the end of the project.
109/109: Screaming Dove

Yeah, that’s the last one. Nothing awesome and was kinda indifferent to it.
110/110: 2R0I2P0 (with Boris)

Damn what a project and a great way to finish this thread. Merzbow and Boris set a stunning atmosphere and make a very good album.
Listening to all of these albums was a pretty intense experience but I made it, I finished my challenge. Wow.
