Laying all cards on the table: I think Zack Snyder is a terrific visual filmmaker who possesses not one ounce of story sense. Sometimes he gets paired up with a good screenwriter (DAWN OF THE DEAD), finds a visual feast to adapt (300), or is handed a great story (WATCHMEN).
But left to his own devices, where he drives the story, we get SUCKER PUNCH and, yes, BATMAN V SUPERMAN. (MAN OF STEEL was a "director jail" gig for him, whether you love it or hate it. He was executing someone else's vision)
In BVS' case, it wasn't necessarily fair, because he was expected to build a universe. But Zack's interests are in deconstructing things, not building them up. That's why Batman is old, why Jimmy Olsen gets shot in the face, and why Bruce Wayne could totally get raped in prison.
Zack Snyder is drawn to what's cool, what's shocking, what makes for a totally *awesome* frame. But he's not particularly interested in the middle bits, the stuff that sells the cool, the shocking, the awesome. And that'll always be his weakness, even if I like his stuff.
Anyway, I really hope he gets to make THE FOUNTAINHEAD. I'll be there day one.
