An educational thread on Yuzu the fruit in Chinese History

So 柚子, the nickname we so fondly call Yuzuru Hanyu by, is this love yellow citrus fruit - citrus junos in Japanese. It's 柚子in Japanese Kanji.

Now interestingly, 柚子in Chinese does not refer to the Yuzu fruit but to pomelo. If you went into a Chinese supermarket and asked for a 柚子, they will get you a Pomelo!
The Yuzu fruit is not commonly sold or seen in the Chinese supermarket. It's more found in Chinese medicine.

The Yuzu fruit in Chinese is known as 香橙or蟹橙. It is believe that the Yuzu fruit originated in China then went to Japan, its earliest documentation in Japan appears to be around 800 A.D in Shoku Nihongi.
In terms of Chinese historical text, the Yuzu fruit is still commonly referred to as 橙. As seen in texts dating around 1000AD (such as
嘉祐本草 in Song dynasty）
In an earlier text around 300BC, it seems to have documented the Yuzu fruit as 柚.

So you can see, for most Chinese historical text you'll see the yuzu fruit referred to as 橙 in the last thousand + years.
柚子is an example of how a language can grow and evolve.
These days I have seen yuzu fruit fragrance etc in Chinese being called 柚子. But as a fruit it is referring to pomelo.
Citizen has been using 西柚 (grapefruit),which literally means a western 柚, as the fruit is imported.

Presumably Citizen uses 西柚because Citizen is 西铁城 and Yuzu is known as 柚子. So 西柚=CitizenxYuzu.
Btw the Chinese fandom nickname for Yuzu is 柚子 because it sounds like Yuzu obviously (not because he looks like a Pomelo 
) and 哈牛 because it sounds like Hanyu (and there are variations based on these two like 牛哥 etc)
