🧵Short thread about the late life and death of Abdullah bin Saud, ruler of the First Saudi State (from 1814 to 1818)🧵:

After his father Saud bin Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad bin Saud passed away in 1814, Abdullah became the successor of the First Saudi State.
When he came to power, he was met with a great challenge; to fight off the expanding Ottoman forces who allied themselves with the Egyptians.

The forces were first led by Mohammad Ali of Egypt, and later by his son Ibrahim, who was known for his brutal ways against the Wahhabis.
One of the reason's the Ottomans went to war with the Wahhabi's is because of attacks on Ottoman trade caravans, which had interrupted the economy of the Empire. The Saudi amir also denounced the Sultan and called into question the validity of his claim to be Caliph.
The heavily outnumbered Wahhabi's did not last long and had to retreat to their stronghold in Najd.

Ibrahim Pasha's brutal ways of war were proven to be successful and it made him a feared enemy.

Short thread of how horrified the Wahhabi's were:

After years of intermittent and desperate fighting, Abdullah bin Saud surrendered. He was brought to Constantinople to be executed.

His crimes:

The sacking of Karbala in 1801/1802, with an army of 12K, killing thousands of civilians and also defacing the shrine of Imam Husayn.
Before his death, Sultan Mahmud the Second (first pic) forced him to listen to the lute. Music is forbidden in Wahhabism, so this was clearly assertion of dominance by the Ottomans.

After being publicly humuliated, Abdullah Bin Saud was beheaded, ending the First Saudi State.
A visitor to Istanbul described Abdullah bin Saud's headless body was impaled in public, his heart was taken out of his chest and his head was fired from a cannon.
