It's interesting that every Romani activist I've spoken to is opposed to the GRT label for different reasons. /Thread https://twitter.com/GRTactivist/status/1297190306711044104
Multiple activists out of E. Europe are (rightfully) angry at the use of the G slur, a word that is directly descended from an ancient Romanian word for Slave.
Others are angry (again, rightfully) that it lumps in multiple groups who are historically, linguistically, and culturally very different.
This Grouping also erases the various communities (Vitsas) of Roma who may be living in the UK.
All this compounded leads to Roma being rightfully angry that members of the Traveller Community use words that many Roma find offensive, as words like Gipsy/gypsy come from words for slave/slaves.
This isn't to mention the fact that grouping all Romani Vitsas in the UK with the various indigenous groups is harmful to Traveller identities, which is something I can't speak to.
It's clear that the GRT label needs to be dropped in favor of a more accurate, less offensive label for the various communities living in the UK.
