Maggie Walker, the daughter of a former slave, was the first woman to charter a bank in the USA in 1902 which offered loans & mortgages to black residents in Virginia who had been previously denied them by white owned banks.
A year later, she opened a department store which allowed black customers to shop with dignity.

They entered through front doors instead of a side door

They could try on clothes & eat at lunch counters

Mannequins were brown skinned

She hired exclusively black women as clerks
That same year, Walker used her newspaper to urge Richmond residents to boycott the city's segregated streetcar system.

This boycott was so effective, the company operating streetcars declared bankruptcy 2 months later

Don't ever think one person can't make a massive difference
