...don't have to in order to get an audience/make money. Band music is still very much alive but exists in its own bubble, and the same for a myriad other genres. So mainstream is actually more mainstream and narrower than ever, making the charts less of a dependable...(2/3)
...cultural barometer. A side-effect of all these 'tribes' having their own spaces online also means that no genre ever really dies any more (as they used to be when squeezed out of the mainstream), leading to an arguable cultural slowdown.
