Those who call themselves anti-imperialists in the current day usually have no idea how economics work. Their analysis of situations are entirely geopolitical, and their core focus is on the CIA instead of the IMF, which goes to the point that the US empire
is mainly an economic project. When these people call dissenters against Omar al-Bashir "colored revolution," and Basher al-Assad 'anti-imperialist,' they don't realize that both of them had implemented IMF recommended structural reforms. The US empire had already won in these
areas. Remember Anti-IMF revolts have been very important for the left. But the current crop of "anti-imperialists" focus on the US empire as a purely media/CIA propaganda machine and not also a primary economic engine keeps us from seeing how interconnected Capital
is with the world (in fact this is one of my major criticisms of Noam Chomsky's Manufactured Consent). And what's even stupider is when these people use the IMF and World Bank in other to project that these supposed non-American nations are 'socialists.'
I guess I'll add some stuff from @chuangcn which provides some light into the analysis of anti-imperialism with ties with anti-capitalism
And if you want some stuff on Syria's ties with the IMF prior to the Syrian uprising which was a continuation of the Arab Spring, here it is: https://twitter.com/solitudepenguin/status/1297010785382731776?s=20
