There is a conversation going on with a young man in seminary. He has a very harsh and dangerous view on suicide and it is intertwined with some messed up theology.
I have worked with children as young as 6 years old who were actively suicidal. One little guy was constantly trying to figure out where we stored the bleach because he knew drinking it would kill him. My memories of this and others are marks on my soul that will never go away.
It is troubling to me read this man’s comments as a potential pastor. The thought that he could some day sit across from a congregant in agony and heap blame and shame and condemnation on them is terrifying.
The world is broken. I see the impacts of evil and abuse every day at work. That 6 year olds resolutely and calmly tell me they want to die and in a very matter of fact way explain their logic behind how they are going to try is clearly a mark of how broken the world is.
But please, please, please— let us not make the effects of a broken fallen world even more profoundly painful by bringing more harm upon the most vulnerable and wretchedly suffering among us.
Learn about suicide and self harm. There are incredible resources and trainings on how to be a support and an ally. Please!!! I can help you find one in your area if you need help.
And if you are dealing with suicidal or self harming thoughts— I am here. Talk to me! Or call a friend or family member you trust. You are not alone.
