this is mostly because the Dem leadership is controlled opposition and receives the same fat checks from corporations who benefit from deregulation and tax breaks as the Republicans do. the job of Dem leadership is to be like "ugh, we tried!" and then fail.
if they actually wanted to make the party stronger they would be trying to appeal to the next generation of voters -- young people. but they absolutely do not want to make the party stronger. that's why they're appealing to Republicans (again).

I need to mute this now but want to address 2 points: the Southern Strategy was the Republicans strategy to gain white voters in the South. It wasn't an attempt to gain specifically Democrat votes. White, southern voters, many of whom *were Democrats.* The difference is important
As for Reagan Democrats, it's my understanding that these are people who left the party and voted for Reagan, but if it was a GOP strategy to woo those voters, I completely stand corrected.
