Sen. @KamalaHarris is the first Black woman and Indian American on the ticket for the two major parties. Indian Americans constitute only about 1% of the total electorate in the US, so this is a proud moment. They are the third largest voting bloc among Asian-Americans. 1/n

While Indian Americans have been visible in academia, public policy, healthcare, and executive roles, they’ve made huge strides in the political arena over the past decade. Of all Asian immigrants, Indians are most likely to identify as Democrats. 2/n

Harris (D) is the first and only Indian American to be elected a senator. However, @SaraGideon (D) is running for senate in Maine in 2020. Earlier this year, Manny Sethi ran in the Republican senate primary in Tennessee but lost. There have been two Indian American governors. 4/n

Both @BobbyJindal (Louisiana) and @NikkiHaley (South Carolina) are Republicans.

@RepBera (D, CA-7) was the 4th Indian American to be elected to the House in 2012 after Dalip Singh Saund (CA-29, 1957-63), Merwyn Dymally (CA-31, 1981-93) and Bobby Jindal (LA-1, 2005-08). 5/n

In 2016, 3 Indian Americans were elected to the House to join Bera. @RepJayapal (WA-7), @RoKhanna (CA-17), @CongressmanRaja (IL-8). In 2018 , there weren’t any new victors, but some came close like @SriPKulkarni (D) and @AftabPureval (D). Sri is running again in TX-22. 6/n

Krishnamoorthi defeated another Indian American, JD Diganvker (R) during his 2018 re-election. @rishikumar1 (D) is running in CA-18 against the incumbent Democrat.

@Hashmi4Va (D) was elected state senator from Virginia in 2019. Both @Dhingrama (D) @monadas (D) serve in the Washington state senate where Dhingra is also the Deputy Majority Leader. @cmkshama has served on the Seattle City Council since 2014 and is Socialist. 8/n

@NirajAntani (R) is the state rep. in Ohio and a state senate candidate this year. Jay Goyal (D) served three terms in Ohio House from 2007-2013.

Mohd. Hameeduddin ( @teaneckmayor) was elected mayor of Teaneck twice and @UpenChivukula (D) is a former mayor and assemblyman in New Jersey.

Shanti Gandhi (R), a descendant of MK Gandhi, was in the Kansas state senate from 2013-15; Rajiv Goyle (D) in the house from 2007-11. 10/n
