Sandbag thread! Going through things a found an original sandbag from building Stock Orchard Street, and the amount of work that this simple thing took came flooding back...1/4
Testing them. Left: strong but too impervious = sand/lime mix never hardens. Middle: Hessian, decays too quickly = mix falls out. Right: final version, open weave plastic, lets rain in to harden mix before decaying decay..2/4
Then had to find someone to make them half width, otherwise too heavy. Then each filled by hand with a gauge to get consistent size, and laid by Steve Archbutt in cavity wall, tamped & tied to timber inner and wetted as he went along to start hardening ..3/4
But final effect begins to match one of the original inspirations, the Kardomah Coffee House in the Blitz! @sw_architects
