I’ll be live-tweeting the #CZULightningComplex 6am press conference in this thread. Got my feeds up, got my coffee, got my cat trying to sit on the keyboard. All systems go.
Come on, @CALFIRECZU turn the feed back on, none of us mind waiting for you to begin <3
Feed up! Fire is at 63k acres, 5% contained, 97 structures destroyed

1,157 personnel on the line
Slowed growth on the north edge of the fire. Late afternoon run towards Davenport on the west side but the community is still in good shape with control lines holding.

Advances into Boulder Creek and Ben Lomond overnight, not established in either community yet
Felton still doing well, there was a spot fire yesterday evening which shows that this fire is unpredictable and capable of a lot of spread still. Local resources very helpful.

More structure loss last night (I expect the structure loss numbers to go up today)
Yesterday was “a big win" and the UCSC fire line is holding really well.
Secondary firebreak being installed on the south end at UCSC, the south end fire line is the product of lots of work and is good.

Priority now that evac is complete is to ensure safety of the evacuated are. If you have a missing person call sheriff or go to red cross website.
Lots of interagency love right now. personnel have come down from the bay area to help with public safety.

Once again, if you see something suspicious on your webcam call sheriff right away. We want to stop looting and we need people OUT to fight the fire.
San Mateo county has 8 public safety teams and no issues last night. Check county social media and sheriffs app for more information, they don't have the resources to respond to public comments right away. 2 evac sites still open at HMB high school and San Mateo events center.
San Mateo large animals are being cared for at the Cow Palace, more resources and info there.
They know that it is hard to wait, they are grateful to community members sharing info online and helping them out that way.

Fire chief now. Fire activity reduced overnight bringing containment to 5%. We anticipate increased acreage reported today
Fire activity is lower last night and today and perimeter control is strong.

Cal Fire CZU up now
Chief reminds us that just because conditions are favorable, the fire complex is super super dangerous. Do not come to Santa Cruz or San Mateo county.

SERIOUSLY IF YOU DO NOT LIVE HERE PLEASE DO NOT COME HERE

Q/A now
Q: missing persons and rescues?
A: about 19 missing person and welfare reports have come in, being channeled to detectives. 2 definite reports still unresolved. Working on that today until resolution. Rescues - WHOA people are calling in FALSE RESCUES to try to move resources
If you call in a FALSE RESCUE report because you think you are so goddamn special that you can BOSS FIREFIGHTERS AROUND you are the worst, I'm sorry, you're making the fire bigger.
Q: looting?
A: Some people are disgusting! Five people arrested, some residents, some outsiders. They are patrolling the area to protect people's homes and they will do so until everyone returns
Q: outside support?
A: masive interagency support, additional resources being distributed throughout the state based on priorities and who needs it most. Can confirm that we have out of state resources coming to help out. It does take some time to get ppl, can be days.
There are fires in other states too.

Q: Increased acreage?
A: We're getting better on the ground information, which means we have a better understanding of where the fire is vs the satellite info. This means that the acreage numbers are increasing, but that's from better data
currently rolling out 5 damage inspection teams, that means the structure numbers will go up, they are only releasing info that is confirmed and verfied
Q: when will this be over
A; no way to tell, the weather coming in on Sunday makes it impossible to know, we will get more containment but right now cannot predict
Final message:
- be patient
- STAY OUT OF THE EVACUATION ZONE PLEASE
- SERIOUSLY YOU MUST STAY OUT AND LET THE FIREFIGHTERS DO THEIR JOB
follow up observations from me:
- Aw, @CALFIRECZU, I love you so much, the Periscope feed didn't crap out at all and the sound was much better today.
As I hoped, there was decreased fire activity overnight and this did give the ff the opportunity to make some progress with regard to building a defensible perimeter. YES! They seemed really happy (In ff land, that means “not grumpy” I think) about the southern fire line.
Additionally, I think they were very glad that Davenport is still safe despite the activity overnight. That line is also holding, great news for the town.

Yes there has been plenty of activity on the ridge above SLV, but they are also holding the line and putting out spot fire.
The spot fire in Felton that they referenced was apparently a long ways away from the active fire zone (this is the fire that the Felton FD referenced yesterday, I think) showing the potential for growth in adverse conditions and the need for vigilance.
Unfortunately, the weather forecast starting tomorrow is, well, crappy. Like, real crappy. Fire weather warning crappy. Be prepared for fire growth starting tomorrow.

That being said, @CALFIRECZU's hard work defo seems to be paying off with fire lines holding and containment up.
Today gives them another opportunity to strategically build fire breaks, fire lines, and increase the strength of the perimeter so that when the bad weather comes back the fire doesn't have as many places to go (or at least, not easily).
Today is an important day, but the work that Cal Fire puts in might be hard to perceive from the peanut gallery. It's a lot easier to count burned houses than it is to count houses that could have burned down but didn’t. Tracking “damage avoided" is hard to do.
We will have a better understanding of their success today in the next few days, when the bad weather comes back and the danger goes up a lot. Basically, anything short of a worst case scenario is going to be a success, with the weather in the forecast.
Yes, there will be more losses.

Some have already happened, and will get counted today when the damage inspection teams go out.

Some losses will happen today. There *is* the potential for huge losses in the next few days which is why the following tweet is so critical:
YOU MUST STAY OUT OF THE #CZULightningComplex FIRE ZONE

YOU, YOUR FRIENDS, AND YOUR FAMILY CANNOT HELP BUT YOU CAN GET IN THE WAY

A QUIET DAY MEANS THE FIREFIGHTERS HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK SUPER HARD TO KEEP US SAFE TOMORROW BUT THEY CAN’T DO THAT WITH CIVILIANS IN THE WAY
It is absolutely excruciating to have to sit tight and not know whether your home and community are burning down. THE WORST. Why do you think I'm channeling all my anxiety into working 16 hour days tweeting out information into the ether? It's because I have SO MUCH ANXIETY.
I know that if you're reading this you're anxious too, and that sucks. But the toughest thing you can do, the bravest thing, is to sit tight and live with the uncertainty while trained professionals do their jobs well without distractions.

Solidarity. ❤️
