Thread: I have noticed a worrying trend online where senior, well-connected environmentalists are increasingly leaving negative comments or rebuttals against the comments of young (sometimes child) environmentalists & climate strikers. Often for reasons of political divergence.
Even if you are simply commenting under a post, understand the power dynamics that are in play. These brave young people already face great pressures and face a world with little economic or climate security. You are now telling them that they are not welcome to work with you.
I urge you to welcome these voices and listen with humility, rather than engage in behaviour that may be construed as threatening or dismissive. These brave, passionate, outspoken young people are incredible assets in their own right, not just when you like what you hear.
The classical Irish environmental movement has flaws, least of which are elitism&gatekeeping. If you are uncomfortable with what is said by new, dedicated&vibrant voices, acknowledge it's possible your views are 'past it'. A chara, it may be an Eat Pray Love learning opportunity.
