I worked on filming of a BBC World News short film on China’s e-commerce & tech innovation. Renowned journalist w/ no prior experience w/ China arrived in Shanghai & Hangzhou w/ a pre-written narrative & corresponding filming schedules. https://twitter.com/alistairsworld/status/1297071924900581376
During interviews, he instructed interviewees to repeat certain singled-out parts of their answers presumably for them to be taken out of context.
He marvelled at the fact that Hangzhou has a population of 10m even though he had never heard of the city before.
When we drove past newly built residential buildings w/ average aesthetic on the outskirts of HZ, he commented ‘if they’re going to build something to be there for a long time, why don’t they just put something nicer there?’
I was asked during one of our only couple of non-work related chats whether or not it was ‘difficult’ for me to obtain government appprval to study abroad.
The film eventually was aired on BBC last year. You can’t make this shit up.
