Mao recalls her friendship with Yuna during junior years. Their mothers swapped delicacies from their home countries and Mao took Yuna out when she came to Japan for competitions. They grew apart after entering senior ranks and media started to hype up their rivalry.
Although Mao always said “I only have myself to beat” when asked by media, she admits to wanting to beat Yuna, naturally.
Their rivalry climaxed in Vancouver OP season. Mao’s reaction to lagging 5 points behind Yuna after Mao delivered a perfect SP was “why??”.

Mao thinks Yuma’s biggest asset is consistency. Her elements are precise with high quality. To beat her, Mao felt she needed to pull out more difficult elements which led her to jump 3 3As.
If it wasn’t for Yuna, Mao thinks she would not have been able to maintain her aspirations for so long. She thanks Yuna as well as media for the motivation.
After Sochi, Mao asked Yuna for a photo and told each other “good job”. If they are to meet again, she thinks they can be good friends. She is ready to improver her English or Korean for that.
