On this day 22nd August 1485, the historically important Battle of Bosworth was fought between the villages of Atherstone, Dadlington & Market Bosworth in Leicestershire.
The forces of King Richard III marched out from Nottinghamshire to oppose the rebel army of Henry Tudor, which had camped the previous evening near Merevale Abbey in Warwickshire.
King Richard evidently made a personal & direct assault on Henry Tudor, intending to kill him & bring an early end to the conflict. However, Richard overstretched himself; he was overpowered, killed & butchered.
It seems that King Richard's butchered body was stripped & carried for burial on the back of a pack-horse to Greyfriars Church, Leicester. Henry Tudor was proclaimed King Henry VII 7 the Tudor era was ushered in....
