Today is Ganesh Chaturthi! The first day of the Ganpati festival!
The origin of Lord Ganesh is very interesting! Lord Shiva was away and his wife Parvati wanted to have a bath!
But there was no one to guard her while she did that!

So she made an idol of a young child using her body waxes and gave him life!
He was guarding her when Lord Shiva returned and was denied entry! In a fit of anger he killed the child which left Parvati crestfallen!

On hearing the story, he promised her to give him life with the head of the first living creature he encounters!
Which turned out to be a baby elephant! And hence the elephant God was born!

Ganapati means the Lord of a group of close devotees, who have reached the climax of devotion.
The word Gana does not mean the entire group of normal souls. Gana means a group of souls, who have become very close to the Lord by their unimaginable devotion.

The Lord is certainly the master of all the souls but, the Gana is specially attached group of souls.
The festival was started by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak to lead the freedom movement! There was a ban on more than 5 people congregating except for religious reasons!

The visarjan/departure is an iconic day. There are 5 manache/central Ganpati Mandal aka organizations who get a place of honor in the procession!
