-It traces its history to 1855, when four Gujarati and one Parsi stockbroker would gather under banyan trees in front of Mumbai's Town Hall.
-Group moved to Dalal Street in 1874 and in 1875 became an official organization known as "The Native Share & Stock Brokers Association".
-People didn't have large investments to be made and there were only 6 brokers in total. Due to American civil war,mills from Abroad had to eye on India for cotton and other needs and as a consequence of increased demand,the prices too started increasing for Surat mills & others.
-Between 1861-1865 export of cotton led to influx of huge income/investments,most of which landed up in MayaNagri i.e. Bombay(Mumbai).This inflow of funds became the base for initial capital to be traded in Indian stock markets.
--Premchand Roychand was the first Indian broker who could read and write English.He was the one who floated first initial issues with huge premiums.
-Several articles of association were signed between brokers. In jul 1875,318 by paying Re 1 became members of stock market.
-In 1887,via trust deed this was formalised. Shri Chuni Lal Motilal,first president of BSE. Shri Shapoorji Parooja next president set up various rules and regulations.
-On 31 August 1957, the BSE became the first stock exchange to be recognized by the Indian Government under the
Securities Contracts Regulation Act. In 1980,the exchange moved to the Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers at Dalal Street,Fort area.
-Historically an open outcry floor trading exchange,the BSE switched to an electronic trading system in 1995.NSE did it first.
