Long thread coming up but the TL;DR is that the Los Angeles Angels should absolutely consider a full scale teardown and rebuild.
The Angels are absolutely awful. They're 8-19 in a 60 game season meaning their year is basically done. Trout signed an extension before last season and somehow despite adding several other cornerstone pieces they've gotten seemingly worse.
I know they just went all in with the Rendon deal but at a certain point, you have the consider a rebuild. Will the return you get back for Trout be equal to what a player like him could bring to your team? Probably not.
But their farm system is poor as well, and they have several players (Trout, Rendon, Ohtani) who may have big contracts but are still in the primes of their careers and I'm sure several teams would be willing to take on those deals if it meant contending in the short term.
I've watched the Angels over the last several seasons, they're unbearably bad and extremely frustrating considering the top tier talent their have in that offense. If they keep trying at this then they're gonna becoming what the Tigers became circa 2015-2017,
a team with veteran talent that finds themselves completely stuck in the mud. The issues plaguing them aren't issues that can be solved with a new manager or pitching coach.
And while trading away high level talent may frustrate the fan base, doing so could lead to an accelerated version of what the White Sox have done, which is trade their best players after realizing whatever window they may have had has closed.
And even if you disagree with everything I said, the fact is every other team in the AL West, including the Mariners, who haven't made the postseason since O-Town was topping the Billboard charts, are closer to contending than the Angels are right now.
I don't very this as an overreaction to a bad start in a 60 game season, this is the continuation of a downward trend that this organization has been on since 2014. That fanbase deserves better. Mike Trout deserves better.
One more thing, the idea of "We're gonna build around Mike Trout" was a dumb idea to begin with. Trout is amazing, the best player of a generation, maybe the best ever, but this isn't the NBA, building around one player isn't feasible.
The Mariners tried to do it with Felix, the Pirates tried to do it with Cutch, the D-Backs tried to do with Goldy and outside of a few alright seasons, it rarely yielded positive results.
