I’ll start here: I think rebelling against masks is on par with rebelling against seatbelts. It’s misplaced. But I get it. Most Americans have an exquisite sense of fair play, and from the start of this mess we’ve seen arbitrary rules, double-standards, and political expediency.
A few examples:

• Liquor stores are “essential businesses,” but gyms are not.

• Home Depot stays open (and packed), but Pop’s Hardware is closed.

• VIP funerals take place in packed cathedrals, but Average Joe can’t hold his mother’s hand when she dies in a hospital.
• Protests are encouraged & riots are tolerated, but beaches are off-limits.

• Utilities are sacred & shall not be deprived — until you piss off the wrong bureaucrat and he shuts off your water.

• Authorities allow thugs to rule the streets, but: You. Will. Wear. Your. Mask.
I don't think elitists like @JoeBiden can understand what the mask has come to symbolize, though it’s really not that complicated. The mask is one small thing over which individuals have control. Of COURSE it's a point of rebellion, and it’s not merely a stand against authority…
…it is a stand against authoritarians. Me? I think it’s daft to rebel against masks. There are bigger fish to fry. But there it is, and career nannies like Biden give us the only answer within their grasp: you will do as I say, and you will like it.
