The science behind micellar waters and how to use it correctly *A thread*

Okay so let’s start from the very core. To understand micellar water is, you need to understand what a micelle is. So what is a micelle? A micelle is a chemical structure that consists of a charged group and a non charged group. They are used in cosmetics to help DISSOLVE

Micelles are a cluster of surfactants and surfactants are compounds that help reduce surface tension. They consist of a hydrophilic head (LOVES WATER) and hydrophobic (HATES WATER) tail like this!

Now surfactants for the most part are used in cosmetics, mainly cleansers, to act as SOAP or DETERGENT or emulsifiers etc (REMEMBER WHAT I JUST SAID) and micellar water acts like a soap! For example, in the cerave micellar water it has a surfactant called Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate

All micellar waters will have a surfactant or maybe more to help you cleanse and break down the dirt and makeup from your skin! It is important to know that your skin (most outerlayer) is LIPOPHILIC (love oil) and the micellar water has a surfactant tail that is LIPOPHOLIC

now remember when we were all young and tried to mess with a magnet and paper clip and BOOM! The paper clip got stuck to a magnet. That’s what the micellar water is doing. LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE. It’s taking up all that dirt, sebum, etc. Off your face bc the water LOVES IT. A TEAM

But remember what I just said how the micellar water is acting like a SOAP! Because it has surfactants!! Y’all go ahead and shake up your bottles if you have some micellar water at home and you’ll see the suds forming. GO AHEAD

Now when you cleanse your skin with the water, guess what?! YOU HAVE SOAP ON YOUR FACE! Yes! S O A P/ SURFACTANTS. Now not all of them are going to be gentle to leave on your skin which is why you DOUBLE CLEANSE and use this FIRST NOT LAST! YEAH IM TALKING TO YALL USING IT SECOND

If you use it second, and start doing the rest of your routine... YOUR FACE ISNT CLEANSED because you have soap on your face still!! NOW THE TONER, EXFOLIANT, ETC. Is gonna be sitting on SOAP. That doesn’t sound right right?

For your night routine if you use this, to CORRECTLY incorporate it you use this FIRST to remove the makeup/dirt then rinse your face with WATER to get rid of those surfactants then go in with your second cleanse! Even if you use it second, rinse with WATER AFTER NO EXCEPTIONS

and if you use this in the morning bc your regular cleanser may be to harsh to use twice a day, what do you do? YOU RINSE IT OFF WITH WATER AFTER! You need to remove the soap from your face before doing the rest of your routine!!! NO IFS NO ANDS NO BUTTS

Because were in the middle of a pandemic and the US is being mad goofy, and you go outside wear a mask and come back home and clean your face with micellar water after taking the mask off, what do you do? YOU RINSE IT OFF WITH WATER! Do I gotta repeat myself again bc a bitch will

Repeat after me, if I use micellar water, I rinse my face with water after. If I use micellar water, I rinse my face with water after. Keep saying it until it’s ingrained in your head!
