Thread alert 🚨

More and more I feel like the healthcare system is ill-equipped to help the person with complex, persistent pain. Myself included.
The lifestyle, environmental, physical, emotional and motivational changes required to make a meaningful difference may be too large, at this point.
Importantly, this doesn’t mean we give up.

Perhaps it means we become better coaches and provide an environment for growth and not dependency.
Perhaps it means we have honest conversations about the multidimensional nature of pain and recognize when the problem is beyond our scope, and refer on.
Perhaps we need to completely change the language around pain and injury so that we have a healthier societal understanding of pain. Away from it being something to be feared and fixed.
Perhaps we need to foster a language of robustness and capacity around the body. Away from it being something fragile and easily broken.
When it comes to the overall messages we share with our patients, perhaps we all need to be playing the same tune. It doesn’t matter so much the instrument we play, provided we play in harmony.
I feel if we shift the focus from the specifics of our intervention to the person in front of us, with all their complexity, we might actually be able to make a difference to the lives of people with pain.

This is our collective task.
