Final day of #PedsNeuro week! A bit longer, but it’s very important to talk about for anyone interested in our profession. Hope more experienced individuals can chime in on this one! @FuturePedsRes #NeuroTwitterNetwork @NMatch2021 #MedTwitter #MedStudentTwitter 1/
@KidsBrainsDrO @paediatrix @StraussHeadache @dr_jmartindale @RajaAshmitha @AnnetteGrefe when I tell other physicians I’m going into to #PedsNeuro, I often get the same response: squinted faces, and “oh I could never do that. It’s too sad” 2/
I understand why a lot of doctors feel that way. When we all came to medical school, a lot of us had this idea of curing people of their illnesses and diseases. We have this natural inclination to become hyper-focused on the pathology that’s causing someone’s problems. 3/
The problem with that view is that it assumes healing means that we must cure people. The truth is that we are all human, and although we all want to do that for our patients, it’s not always possible. In reality, healing and curing are two different thing. 4/
The fear I think many providers have towards a field like #PedsNeuro centers the difficulty that we can’t cure every disease, which is something that can be encountered often in child neuro; however, that doesn’t mean we can’t heal. Healing is a humanistic process. 5/
When we heal, we consider the person, not the problem, and we acknowledge that even with the best medicine, we can still not cure every disease. Sometimes in #PedsNeuro, we must accept our own humanity, and tend to the needs of patients and families that we can affect. 6/

There are many things we cannot cure, but there is no situation we cannot help heal. Wether that providing medical therapy, or giving emotional support to families, #PedsNeuro is, at its core, a humanistic field for this reason. 8/ families that we can affect. 6/
#PedsNeuro is a field that draws on this notion. There are many things we cannot cure, but there is no situation we cannot help heal. Wether that providing medical therapy, or giving emotional support to families, #PedsNeuro is, at its core, a humanistic field for this reason. 8/
Never do we “give up”, and the life saving therapies we can offer now are vastly different than a just a few years ago, yet we all strive to treat the people in front of us, and not a problem. Humanism is pivotal, and it makes love this field even more! 9/
Sorry for some of the mistakes in that! Getting late and didn’t proofread well!
