Plans must have seriously been delayed due to COVID-19 issues. This is what we are seeing with a lot of publishers, including first parties. Even if COVID isn't directly affecting them, the market and general economy is. https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1276501323098316800
This is the only gen I know of where we have gotten four different info streams relating to a console, a full fledged TV ad and still no price or release date less than three full months from launch. COVID-19, whether it directly affects plans, has affected the market.
To most consumers, $500 is the limit for what they consider feasible for a console. But now, with most consumers out of work, Sony has to target their enthusiast base which tends to have a much higher income. It's going to be challenging to market these consoles right now.
PS5 will certainly sell a ton, and those who are currently working and have retained a good level of income will likely purchase the PS5 at launch if it's $500 or below, but it's going to be difficult to market it towards general consumers who make up the bulk of their sales.
While the world does not revolve entirely around the US, it's a fact that a ton of game industry sales come from the US. When nearly 50M are out of work, their first thought isn't "Wow, I wonder what Square Enix is coming out with" and more "Wow, I wonder how I'll pay rent"
Games sold a ton during COVID-19 lockdowns, especially when people had money coming in, which isn't at all surprising. What is the safest, most effective way to spend time with friends and keep up during these times? By playing games. It makes sense. But money is running out now.
I think the most challenging thing for companies nowadays is marketing consoles during a time where a large swath of their consumer base may not be able to purchase said products, even if they enjoy them. They'll definitely need to market towards enthusiasts or early adopters.
I think when things get better and people are back to work, we'll see game sales continue to jump up and console sales go up. Undoubtedly, both Sony and Microsoft will have to take a loss on their consoles. I also think both will sell better than expected, even during these times
