The Lost City of Atlantis: A Thread
The legend of Atlantis reflects one of humanity’s greatest unsolved mysteries. Where did this civilization come from, what happened to it, where is the evidence of it's existence and how do we still know about it today?
Plato first told the story of Atlantis around 360 BC. He had heard it from his grandfather, who had heard it from an Athenian statesmen (300 years before Plato's time), who had heard it from an Egyptian priest, who said it happened 9000 years before that.
As the story goes, the founders of Atlantis were half-god, half-human. They created the utopian civilization and became a great naval power. Their home was made up of concentric islands separated by wide moats and linked by a canal that penetrated to the center.
Atlantis was not an isolated civilization, but was part of a world culture and there were earlier civilizations reaching back to even more remote times. Long before it's decay, it had a golden age. Science, spirituality and society blended together beautifully.
There are many theories as to where this civilization was located. Because it was considered a global society it's hard to say, but it was believed to exist in the Atlantic ocean, between Europe and the Americas.
The Atlantic Ocean means, "sea of Atlas" named after the Greek God of navigation and astronomy. It was from his name that "Atlantis" and "Atlantic" developed.
Before the end of the last Ice Age 12,000 years ago the ocean levels were at least 300 feet below their current levels. The island was in the area in those remote times rather than chains of islands. The islands do not appear to be mountainous today, but 12,000 years ago it was.
The Theosophists believed that the civilization of Atlantis reached its peak between 1,000,000 and 900,000 years ago, but destroyed itself through internal warfare brought about by the dangerous use of psychic and supernatural powers of the inhabitants.
According to Edgar Cayce, The first destruction of Atlantis was due to a misuse of advanced technology for eliminating large carnivorous mammals that were overrunning the earth; the second, to a misuse of a “firestone” that gathered cosmic energy;
The third, to a similar misuse of a crystal that employed both solar and geothermal power. This last destruction was complete by 9500 BCE—a date very close to Plato’s.
According to readings, the people of Atlantis became aware of the fact that their civilization was about to be destroyed. They migrated to other parts of the world including Egypt and the Yucatan Peninsula. They brought with them their technology, beliefs, and recorded history.
The great flood that is so well documented by many of the ancient religions could very well be depicting the fall of Atlantis and the need to start society over again. It also corresponds in time with the first ancient civilizations that began cropping up afterwards.
Even though it's considered a great myth of our history. It still remains very present in our world today. Notably in Disney's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire", and in Assassin's Creed "The Fate of Atlantis". Both show the advanced civilization and it's demise.
Atlantis shares much with today’s world. The rapid development of society reflects an unconscious reflection of Atlantean achievements. Civilization today is far more developed overall than it has ever been.
History is knowledge and knowledge is power. The significance of Atlantis is its eventual resurfacing could reawaken the recognition of our own potential and collective abilities. So in closing:
I think our ancient past is not ready to be known about yet. Such a discovery would change the fabric of society in dramatic ways and humanity as whole is not quite ready to take that step. Our history books would need to be re-written, but more importantly..
Those that control the past also control the present. If we knew about our ancient history, the technology & spiritual powers that we once had, it would change everything. We would know we are capable of much more greater advancements. And that's not good for controlling society.
