@BGSU students are moving in. The reopening plan is one that seems dead-set on making the Bowling Green Massacre a reality. A thread:

A big component of BGSU's plan was to push students towards off-campus housing offering $1500. For those that haven't lived in the rust-belt, this would have covered my rent through March 1st.

Unfortunately, this dried up the rental market entirely and at least some students have started cramming into the same house while using their parents address and "commuting". @bgsu managed to convert pairs of roommates into unmanaged large groups in offcampus houses.

Townie dynamics have long-since consolidated student housing into one large neighbourhood which makes for both great parties and transmission of coronavirus. The university solution is simply to ban large off-campus parties.

This is an absolute joke because a) large underage drinking parties have always been illegal and always happened b.) there are 41 police and 17,000 students. Not to mention all the very large (fun) parties that happen in the countryside.

By the end of the weekend a few big spreading events will have occurred. Of course some (perhaps most) students will abide by the rules. None of that matters because a full 70% of courses have an in-person component.

The gym is also open including "in-person programs such as group exercise classes and peer education".
Libraries? Yup.

Restaurants? Sure.

Suffice to say we'll have rampant community spread in two weeks throughout the student population. Without a coherent testing plan, this will go unnoticed for a good chunk of September. Unlike more wealthy schools, many students have off-campus jobs.

These include everything from grocery stores to assisted-living facilities. Between these jobs and housing that serves low-income families and students, I worry we'll only notice things when it's too late and members of the community start dying.

The real question is what happens next. The students moved off campus have leases and cannot be sent home under any reasonable mechanisms. Our hospital system is regularly strained with long wait times at the ER during *normal* flu seasons. 10/n
The few thousand students living on campus will be sent home. This will bring the coronavirus to communities Ohio/Michigan. I don't have some clever solution, but I'm distraught watching my Alma Mater utterly disregard the well-being of my hometown. #AshamedFalcon

Had to come back and express my astonishment that they're even hosting an on-campus juggler: https://twitter.com/bgsuorientation/status/1296590544479621123
