CW transphobia
Remember Homers Phobia? It painted gay people as fun, outgoing, charming, and patient with the bigotry they deal with.
John challenged Homer's perceptions and taught him something about the world. It changed hearts + minds about gay men.
Trans women got... this. https://twitter.com/StopTweetingMia/status/1296516309232939009

There's Something About Marrying got so much positive praise for being "pro gay" and people either ignored the trans angle entirely or praised it.
GLAAD threw the trans community under the bus because everyone was starved for any mainstream lesbian representation at all.

The attitude at the time was so much about assimilation.
"How can gays and lesbians show everyone that we're NORMAL? We're not like those weirdo queers and transsexuals!"
Which led to kind of okay gay/lesbian representation and HORRIBLE treatment of trans people in media.

It's indicative of the way bigotry works in our society and why representation is important.
Homer's Phobia hasn't aged well, but it was SOMETHING and it SLOWLY made the world a safer place for gay men. Trans people are still a punching bag 23 years later.

We watched Homer's Phobia in high school. Everyone loved it and that was definitely someone's first positive interaction with a gay person. It had a net positive effect on the world.
I shudder to think if we had watched There's Something About Marrying instead.

And hey, let's look at the plot for There's Something About Marrying.
Patty comes out as a lesbian, Marge is homophobic and tries to turn her straight, realizes Victoria is trans, reveals that to everyone, showing her support while being blatantly transphobic. Standing ovation.

It's exactly what the writers did with this episode. Teens era Simpsons is FULL of homophobia. Just so much. And they kept doing it for years after this episode. But they make one episode "for the gays" and use it to shit on trans women. Standing ovation from GLAAD.
I'm glad shit is slowly changing. We have POSE and Euphoria and Sense8 and a trans woman on Supergirl and Theo in Sabrina and almost nothing on film.
I'm excited to see what kind of trans characters we get in mainstream media in the next 10 years because I'm fucking starved.

ANYWAY, I'm writing a movie about a trans woman who travels back in time to meet her pre-transition self and get some closure on her past relationships.
