Canada's embrace of euthanasia is scary. This article points out some of the problems. I'll put the ones I think are biggest as a thread below /1 https://mercatornet.com/the-optics-are-not-good-lessons-from-euthanasia-in-canada/65677/
Even though passed by taking about individual autonomy, this assisted suicide, less than seven of the 5,631 cases of medically assisted death in 2019 in Canada were assisted suicide & thus over 99.8% were euthanasia where the doctor kills the patient. /2
Assisted suicide vs euthanasia really matters. Despite having it legal far longer, Oregon where only assisted suicide is legal has only reached about 1/4 the rate in Canada where both are legal (0.5% vs 2.0% of deaths). /3
"Oddly, given euthanasia is not yet officially permitted in Canada for psychiatric conditions, 1.2% of cases of euthanasia were administered by psychiatrists." This is particularly scary when combined with possible coercion or lack of mental awareness. /4
In 46 cases, the doctor preforming euthanasia in Canada admitted that they did not consult the patient. I suspect that this is much higher as there is no proof of consultation in most cases (just that the doctor said he consulted). /5
In a signification portion of cases palliative care or disability services was not even accessible to those who got euthanasia in Canada. This means that euthanasia was not the last resort. /6
13% in Canada reported “isolation or loneliness” as the reason to kill themselves. We as Christians need to remember that "visit the sick" is one of the corporal works of mercy. /7fin
Actually, one follow up for Americans: in the USA, this is a question that many states will soon take up. We need to educate ourselves on how bad it's gone in other countries so we can effectively prevent its legalization here.
