For folks looking to write about fire in California, there are many kinds of expertise and story angles. I’ll thread some here and others should feel free to add others (hoping to relieve @Weather_West’s inbox a bit)! https://twitter.com/weather_west/status/1296861705759125504
For Indigenous and cultural burning, which is vital, @Pyrogeographer @CulturalFire @DenissJMartinez are all excellent folks to reach out to. @JaredDahlAldern and @JoannaNelsonPhD are good connectors as well. Please feel free to add yourself or others here!
There are many fire knowledgeable colleagues with UC cooperative extension, including @UCsierraforest (forestry) @UCDRange @flyingmulefarm @BeefnSushi (range, animal evac, targeted grazing, etc) @MaxMoritzFire and many more not on Twitter (see list here https://ucanr.edu/sites/fire/Contact/Question/)
There are several good folks at UC Merced including @pyrogeog @climate_guy @LeroyWesterling @safeeqkhan, all of whom offer complementary expertise in everything from weather and climate to watershed level fire risk reduction.
For energy related issues, I turn to @MichaelWWara and @DustinMulvaney. For structure fire issues @steveq53 is the expert.
For mental health related to disasters, @drkiakeating is fantastic. https://twitter.com/frkearns/status/1242466820226822146
There are also wildlife and wildfire issues to explore. Check out work by @EmilyFairfax with beavers, for example. https://twitter.com/emilyfairfax/status/1097195169131024384
I know I’m missing many people and issues as I do this on the fly, so please don’t be shy! Add yourself here (or DM me and I’ll compile!), or other people and topics (eg, smoke, covid, evacuation, etc). Not overlooking anyone intentionally.
You can follow @frkearns.
