What Are You Reading?

Reading books has affected my career greatly. Let me share a very queer experience. Around 2014, I got a call from a top brass in the organization I worked for then. He referred an Israeli who was in Nigeria for the first time to me.
He had just established a new company. He was looking for a banking relationship. After speaking with the prospect on phone, we scheduled a face to face meeting in my office in VI then
Anticipating his needs, I made arrangements for my colleagues handling different segments that may impact on his business to be present. I wanted to be able to answer all his questions and seal the deal right there. We were about 10 in my office.
It was a Monday morning when the prospect walked in. He came along with his South African partner. We exchanged pleasantries and I introduced him to each of my colleagues. Still standing, he looked at a book on my desk and asked, "You read Malcolm Gladwell?".
I was reading David and Goliath written by Gladwell then. " Yes", I responded. He asked me which other titles I've read. I mentioned them. Outliers- The story of success. Blink. The Tipping Point. What The Dog Saw. He asked me which one was my favourite.
I told him it was Outliers. His was The Tipping Point. We discussed both books standing and pumping hands. Curiously, all my colleagues were hearing about the books and author for the first time. The prospect suddenly banged my desk and announced, "I'm opening my account here"
We didn't even pitch or sell any value proposition. It was just about books. That relationship became a very significant one.
What you read will certainly influence your outlook. A reading nation is a progressive nation. No nation can go beyond the information they have or the knowledge they possess. A nation that is being extinguished will start with atrophy of the mind.
Libraries will die. Book stores will become a rarity. People will prefer to be entertained than be informed.
There is a way the deep calls to the deep. Invest in your mind. Go hungry rather than live empty. There's a reason the Scripture says you should 'Buy the truth, and sell it not;  also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding". (Proverbs 23:23 KJV)
You need to buy wisdom. Buy instruction. Buy understanding. They don't come cheap. Invest in them. I love the way the Contemporary English Version puts it: Invest in truth and wisdom, discipline and good sense, and don't part with them. Proverbs 23:23
