Mini-thread here on Bucs kicking situation -- Elliott Fry, challenging Matt Gay for the starting job in Tampa, had a strong day today, outdueling Gay in a series of kicks and then nailing a 56-yard kick in a simulated end-of-game live-clock situational drill at the end.
More about Fry -- he's 25, is South Carolina's all-time leading scorer after kicking there from 2013-16. He kicked for Spurrier again with AAF's Orlando Apollos in spring 2019 and went 14-for-14 on field goals there. Was with Bears and Ravens in preseason last year as well.
Panthers had him on their roster this spring, and when they cut him, Bucs picked him up as competition for Gay, who was a fifth-round pick in 2019 and kicked all of last season.
Bucs chart every kick in camp/preseason and both have been solid in practice up until today, where Fry clearly had the better day and Gay missed three straight kicks. They'll go to the stadium for "game" situations in next two weeks, and those kicks will be important in this.
Gay struggled at the end of last year, missing three field goals in season finale, but he's still a more known commodity in real live-game situations, so that's a tough hurdle for Fry to overcome. Today makes the competition much more interesting over the next two weeks.
