I've been to downtown Vancouver every day this week and every time, no matter the neighborhood, I've seen people shooting up, passed out, or in a state. Needles and other paraphernalia in the street common, too. Our politicians only have two "answers:" more drugs, less judgment.
The "more drugs, less judgement" approach is the only one that's been pursued for at least 20 years. It's been an utter disaster, yet you still have all these activists, who command the attention of our politicians, saying there's still TOO MUCH judgement and NOT ENOUGH drugs.
"More drugs, less judgement" seems to be the only thought our politicians have the capacity to hold. They're unanimously convinced that a massive scourge of drug addiction is just something to be "managed," and that there's something morally wrong about being too bothered by it.
I saw people sharing this piece as if it exposed anything interesting about this issue. All it shows is that "more drugs, less judgement" activists never admit their ideology is flawed, they simply turn against former allies for not being dogmatic enough. https://thetyee.ca/News/2020/08/19/Advocates-Blast-Overdose-Crisis-Response/
Premier Horgan is getting criticism on this issue, for sure. He has been criticized by the Liberal Party for suggesting drug addicts possess any agency in their lives, and criticized by "drug user activists" for not providing enough heroin to addicts. A lively debate in B.C.!
