5 tags 5 games, but everyone knows what my favourites are at this point so instead I'm gonna make this a thread on why I love the 5 games in the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, which I will not shut up about bc I feel all of them are very underrated!!

Oh and I know all of these have genuine problems! I just really wanna gush on what I personally love about them!!
1. FFXIII
Its linear gameplay streamlines the plot and gives a constant urgency unlike any other game in the series. You're fugitives right? Everything, even to the game's code, has plot-relevant subtlety to it. The story is of gods, fate, life, death, humanity and promises.(1/2)
(2/2) The fact that this is a trilogy means that in hindsight so much of its rich lore sets up so well for the later games and I love seeing that. And the scale of world never stops impressing me, it might be linear but you just FEEL how big the world is, especially Pulse.
2. FFXIII-2
There's no getting around it; XIII had problems. Which is why I respect 2 for acting on them! I love the time travel premise and how Etro's first sympathy to mankind in aeons had such consequences. Seeing how areas change over time was really cool. (1/2)
(2/2) in a weird way, I also love how divorced it can be from the others. Everything is still built around the FNC lore of the gods, but seeing how it's humans acting on it instead of just gods being dicks is really interesting. Also, that OST is just....absolute fire 🙌
3. LRFFXIII
As someone that loved the lore of XIII-1, this was amazing both to see how far back it was planned, as well as how much the characters have changed. Literally nobody is the same and it feels so much like you've been through the same span. (1/2)
(2/2) I loved the open world aspects, and how much the time limit made you appreciate every second. Everyone in the world had a story, one you could often even listen to. And the ending wrapped up so much so well; I can easily tell much of Versus XIII got pulled into this one.
Speaking of, though it never came to pass, waiting on the development of Versus XIII was genuinely a large part of my life. LR13 in some respects meant a lot because I already knew it would become XV, but its ending parts I now see were parts of the 2018 plot leak. And I cry.
4. FFT0
Type 0 goes nuts on the lore of FNC and complements/contrasts the role of the fal'Cie and l'Cie in such a unique way, its equally unique heavy focus on war being the perfect backdrop for genuine questions on life, death and purpose in a mature setting. (1/2)
(2/2) It is bar none the most tragic game in the FNC and it does so in a respectful way. Death is a common theme in FNC but T0 is the only one that really asks what the purpose of life is if your life might be lost to history someday - pertinent right now with so much death.
5. FFXV
The loss of Versus XIII upset me. So when XV finally came along, albeit in its very incomplete form, I didn't give it anywhere the credit it now deserves, particularly for how Versus XIII and its rendition of the FNC never genuinely left. (1/4)
(2/4) Having replayed with all DLC and supplements in July, I see a story of tragedy from the very beginning under the guise of freedom, which on the one hand has filled the wanderlust in my quarantined heart greatly - on the road with the 4 most "real" characters I've ever seen.
(3/4) There are SO many pitfalls XV could've had with its "chosen one" narrative, and Noctis defies them all with his character development. The final few chapters when played with the DLC are heart breaking, knowing what all give for him, for him to return.
(4/4) XV hits so many of the same beats as XIII on the gods bene/malevolence, and as T0 on what sacrifice means. And what it adds to the mix is the humanity and relatability that they lacked. The ending of LR13 almost certainly ties into XV, shifting from fantasy to reality.
In doing this, FNC finally completes with XV by showing from a transition from fantasy to reality that many of its messages applied to us in the real world the whole time.

XV symbolises so much of what I love about the other four and why I will never, ever shut up about them.
