The Libertarian Party presidential ticket must decide if they want to educate people or win. By win, I mean get 5 percent of the popular vote- the point at which they would qualify for federal campaign matching funds.
How can the LP get 5 percent of the popular vote? Even if every registered Libertarian voted for them, it still wouldn't be enough. So, they must pull votes from non-registered Libertarians.
Who? People who don't like Biden or Trump is too broad. They should target non-Libertarians *most likely* to vote Libertarian: right-leaning independents and disaffected Republicans.
Why the right and not the left? Yes, Libertarians agree with the left on some issues: victimless crimes, peace, civil liberties, etc. But the Green Party also agrees with those issues and more.
It honestly makes little sense that a left-leaning independent or disaffected Democrat would vote Libertarian over Green. They are likely to disagree with the LP on other major issues.
If the goal is to win, it's a waste of time to try to appeal to people not likely to vote for you. And it can definitely turn off your base which is the biggest no no. We have seen this with the LP and the polarizing Black Lives Matter movement/organization.
In other words, don't lose your base reaching out to the left who won't ever vote for you.
A better strategy is to reach out to right-leaning independents and disaffected Republicans. Jo Jorgensen going on Glen Beck's show is a great move. Tweeting out identity politics stuff... not so great.
Zone in on the reasons that they won't vote for Trump. Character is a big one. Excess spending. His handling of COVID. Red flag laws. Instability.
I believe 5% of the popular vote is reachable. As long as they can keep the Libertarian base and get some of the disaffected right- so don't scare them off ;)
