The Phalgunis (13°20’ Leo – 10°00’ Virgo) are a pair of Nakshatras that are an integral part of the Cosmic Story.

Located in the Cosmic Cycle’s 2nd Phase, these abundantly fertile Nakshatras play a very important role on the material plane.
In this region of the Cosmos, prominent are the themes of Love and Union, and the fruits (Phala) of Love and Union, in the highly prolific 5th House of Leo in the Natural Zodiac.

The Phalgunis are strongly associated with marriage, with their main symbol being the marriage bed.
The word Phalguna means red, and so the Phalgunis are highly associated with the color red.

In Hindu culture, red symbolizes passion and fertility, which in this case represents the ardent generative power of the Phalgunis.

In this respect, the Phalgunis are similar to Rohini. https://twitter.com/shadyoracle/status/1284137983713538049
Along with the marriage bed, one of the main symbols of the Phalgunis is the hammock.

These symbols indicate the theme of rest and relaxation, which the Soul is very much in need of, having just passed the intensely harrowing Ashlesha/Magha Gandanta point at the Cancer/Leo cusp.
In Sanskrit, the word Phalguni expresses the idea of the “fruits of one’s good Karma.”

This means that Phalguni natives are highly capable of reaping the benefits of the good deeds of their past lives, hence the strong themes of rest, enjoyment, and pleasure in these Nakshatras.
The Phalgunis are composed of 2 Nakshatras: Purvaphalguni and Uttaraphalguni.

The 2 are very similar in their natures, and can be seen as parts of a single cosmic entity.

But at the same time, they possess multiple distinguishing features that are important to take note of.
Purvaphalguni (13°20’ – 26°40’ Leo) is ruled by the Aditya (Solar deity) Bhaga, the God of Pleasure, Prosperity, and Marital Bliss.

Bhaga symbolizes the concepts of Beauty, Excellence, and Vigor, and all of this is strongly reflected in Purvaphalguni’s highly Venusian nature.
Uttaraphalguni (26°40’ Leo – 10°00’ Virgo) is ruled by Aryaman, the God of Contracts, Wedding Vows, and Societal Regulations.

While Uttaraphalguni—similar to its antecedent, Purvaphalguni—is also passionate and sensual, Aryaman introduces an element of seriousness and formality.
There has been some confusion about the ruling deities of the Phalgunis, and if you’ve read extensively, you may have noticed that some sources correlate Aryaman with Purvaphalguni and Bhaga with Uttaraphalguni, and I’d like to provide some clarity to this very unusual situation.
It has been said that there originally was not a significant distinction between Bhaga and Aryaman, and that as time passed, both diverged to form 2 distinct entities.

What clearly elucidates the differences between Bhaga and Aryaman is the marriage between Shiva and Parvati.
In the story of the Divine Union of Shiva and Parvati, it is told that the marriage procession and wedding celebrations occurred under Purvaphalguni while the solemnization of the marriage and the exchange of the wedding vows occurred only when the Moon moved into Uttaraphalguni.
This shows that Purvaphalguni has more to do with the enjoyment aspect of the Phalgunis, while Uttaraphalguni carries more serious undertones.

It is said that Purvaphalguni represents relaxation in the bed, and that Uttaraphalguni is rising from the bed and getting back to work.
Thank you for reading!

This thread is meant to provide a general overview of the Phalgunis as a whole, illustrating their similarities and their differences.

Soon, I’ll be making threads individually dedicated to each of the two Phalgunis to explore them in detail.

Stay tuned!
