Today is Jason Marquis' 42nd birthday. Dude was a solid big leaguer, threw almost 2,000 inning over 15 seasons, but more importantly he's the centerpiece of TWO of the greatest, most hilarious baseball videos of all time.
Buckle up.
Buckle up.
Summer 2009, 2 key things happen:
1.) Marquis puts up the best half season of his career and makes the All-Star team with the Rockies.
2.) South Shore Little League of Staten Island wins the Mid-Atlantic Regional and advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport.

Just so happens that Marquis took South Shore Little League all the way to the USA Final of the LLWS back in 1991. He's a legend there.
So when it comes time for the kids on 2009 team to list their favorite players, guess who's at the top of almost everyones list. JASON MAHKEE.

If you're counting at home thats 1 Piazza, 1 Teixeira and 10 Jason Marquis.
The timing here is amazing.
A year earlier Marquis was an average innings-eating 4th starter for the Cubs, a year later he's injured on the Nats. But summer of 2009, Marquis was the GUY. So funny.

Ok speaking of the Nats let me tell you about the second Marquis thing. This one can't really be told without shouting out @sschreiber13 who tweets this video, or a screenshot of the video I'm about to talk about at least once a week.
After his All-Star year, Marquis signs a 2-year deal with the Nats. At this point the Nats are a big joke and Marquis is one of the 1st guys to sign with them in Free Agency.
To get the fans amped, MASN puts out this Jason Marquis hype video.
It is elite, elite baseball cringe.

As someone who grew up in the DC area during this time, I can confirm that this video captures the corniness of Nats fandom of that era SO PERFECTLY.
Like laughing at the idea of Marquis signing with Philly, who's the best team in MLB at that point...
"FOR WHAT A CHEESESTEAK?"

Anyway, Marquis was a reliable pitcher, with a commendable MLB career who just stumbled into two ICONIC baseball videos.
We interviewed him once and he was a super nice guy. His accent is just like the LL kids who loved him so much.
Long live Jason Marquis. Happy birthday man.
