You CAN make a great plan. You probably do have the best plan in the country. But 2020 has show us that plans aren't worth much. Your plan is based on what we knew in March. It's now August. And just because It's a great plan, doesn't mean it is the right plan for RIGHT NOW.
Where do you think you will get enough masks and PPE to outfit 1 million students & employees PER DAY? Other smaller school districts couldn't find enough. And when you buy up all the PPE and cleaning supplies, what will be left for the hospitals and emergency workers?
When there is a second spike because YOU opened the flood gates and forced us all to be vectors in this deadly disease, how will the hospitals & doctors & nurses be able to get their PPE? Will you donate it all to them since we won't be able to go back in schools anyway?
When you are in the midst of a budget shortfall, and you are threatening to lay off 9,000 teachers (>12% of your teacher workforce) who busted their butts in the spring to do your plan, do you think that will really "boost" the economy? How will you manage large class sizes?
My fear of not having a plan until the 11th hour has passed. It's already the 11th & a half hour. This will be NO different than the spring, when we became virtual teachers and guinea pigs overnight. We will again be starting with Plan B (or realistically, Plan F).
It is crystal clear that you do not value your staff & students. That we are your political pawns for your own personal agenda, just like you politicize the "data." NYC might be at 3% positivity, but my students and I are living in 17% positivity & traveling to 6% positivity.
So please, @NYCMayor and @DOEChancellor: save the millions of dollars in rapid testing and PPE so that the folks in the hospitals, our emergency workers, and those that need it most have access. Save the teachers. START REMOTE.
This is not an economic issue. This is an equity issue. Those that need supplies the most will NOT have access to them. Put your politics and privilege to the side and do what's right for your city.
