Caller asks @NYCMayor on @BrianLehrer why the city hasn't poured its efforts into improving remote learning rather than focusing on reopening school buildings.
Mayor responds that families "need their kids to be in school in person." "I work for the parents. I work for the kids of this city... I'm not going to damn them" to "less education than they deserve."
But, and this is me talking here, the current hybrid model does little to address child care concerns. City hasn't even said if there's going to be after-school care available, if I'm not mistaken.
Asked how many teachers were trained over the summer on remote learning, mayor says he'll have to get back with that number. Mayor says "the rich get richer" when it comes to remote learning. Says you can make it better but you can't make it fair.
Another caller is worried about kids wearing masks on public transit and wants to make sure students have them to ride to school and back.
Another caller wants money re-directed to testing to be able to reopen schools like LA's model, and another asks about neighborhoods where transmission rates are higher than the 3% threshold set by the mayor for reopening.
Mayor says LA's testing plan is "very vague, if not noble." I'm sure people who have been trying to reopen schools will have feelings about the mayor calling reopening plans of OTHER cities vague.
That's a wrap for the mayor on WNYC.
