A thread on Cancel Culture - In the late 80's, we introduced mandatory minimums. This basically set 5 or 10 year mandatory sentences for certain drug violations. As early as '91, people in the judicial system were saying these weren't helpful.
So in '94, they put in a safety valve for first time offenders. But still the minimums remained, and they served to put tons of low level offenders behind bars. Not rehabilitating, no education, and 5 years removed from society. Revolving door of prison sentences, effectively.
Additionally, in '88 they passed a conspiracy law. Now, I may not sum this up great, but effectively, if you're AT a house that gets raided and was selling drugs, you can be charged with every crime that happened in that house. Conspiracy.
Effectively, and I'm taking this example from a PBS article on it, they could charge someone at the door with the same crime as the guy running the show. Now, the intent was to put pressure on them to promote snitching. The result was more people in jail. Door keeps revolving.
Now, fact sheet here, it's nothing shocking. Thank you to Civil Rights groups for doing the legwork. White people get charge slightly less than Black people, much less than Hispanics. And white people have the highest rate of getting minimums relieved.

This right here? That's cancel culture.
We made a slew of laws in the 80's for the war on drugs. Then threw people in jail, then privatized the jails to make them for profit. And now that some of these laws are being changed, we're not en masse pardoning them retroactively
And even if they DID, they have no job skills when they get out. They're left to fend for themselves. And when you look at a hierarchy of needs, they need food and shelter. So they'll do anything to fulfill those needs for them and theirs. Including back to crime.
That's cancel culture. So fuck off about this sports announcer getting shitcanned because we all have quasi-racist grandparents that say shit they aren't allowed to say anymore and he actually got caught on a hot mic and has to pay for it.
Because he's gonna have a job next year when we all get distracted by the next outrageous thing. And in the meantime, he's been a sports broadcaster for years. He's got money. He probably gets free dinners in any restaurant in his state he announces in.
But the people in jail our out of jail who have no support system? They're fucked.

You don't want to get cancelled from your job? Don't say stupid offensive shit. Don't assault people about wearing a mask. Don't use aggressive force as a cop.
But your life oftentimes isn't cancelled. You're alive. You can fade into obscurity soon enough. Stop fucking whining, you got caught, and you got fired. Move on and take your consequences like an adult. At least we're not putting you in jail for 5 years.
