Today a regional packer is being managed by two women.

All the men on our executive team are out of the office for a couple days for various reasons.
This may not seem like much to some, but for me this is a huge day.

When I was 24, in my first meat job, the men on that executive team made bets about how long it would be until I got pregnant and quit to be a good housewife.
A few years later, another executive team made the decision to give the boss that told customers that “he didn’t hire me because I was smart” and who started a rumor that I traded sex for sales a 7-figure retirement package.
This spring a customer set up a rape trap in a hotel room during a hotel property tour. Then became irate when I managed to leave about the effort he had gone to to have a drink with me and that I had spurned his advances.
Over the years, I’ve experienced the highs and lows of working in a historically tough business. Don’t get me wrong the good outweighs the bad—-because along the way, good, good men took up for me. Good, good men defended my honor and fought beside me for better.
But it remains very true that more than one person has hoped, bet or made plans that I would fail.
So as I sit down at my desk today, next to another woman who has been in the trenches for ten years, there is a tremendous sense of accomplishment.

We can be beautiful. We can be smart. We can be kind. We can be tough as nails and kind of scary.

And we can run a packer.
