Each town’s curfew bells had their own purpose. In #Berwick they were rung to warn townsfolk to get back inside the town walls before the gates closed, which subsequently inspired the name of the @CurfewMicropub in Bridge Street and the annual Curfew Run.
At #Kelso the curfew bell is housed in the town hall and sounds prior to the Whipman’s Rideout during @kcweek. #Selkirk’s bell, cast by Lester & Pack, of London, in 1757, still chimes the curfew nightly from the town hall at 8pm.
In recent years, #Hawick's curfew bell has sounded 26 times after 8pm, which may seem a tad excessive until you’ve visited #Montrose. That royal burgh’s principal bell – “Big Peter” – clangs 284 times at 10pm each night and has done since the Second World War!
