what interesting things have you read on the DLP and the 1955 ALP split? especially interested in stuff to do with migration (e.g. the dream of creating an Italian Catholic peasant class).
(nb: reading recs *only*. unsolicited explanations will be met with summary execution)
also please do not recommend non-transcribed podcasts, documentaries, etc. text only. MAYBE interesting installation art pieces. thats all the forms of communication i can think of at this time
sorry to be like this but it is unbelievable what people will try to explain to women online if you don't make it clear the attempt will be met with the finest damascus steel
you may explain what you found interesting about a reading rec that is permissible
i think people don't realise how Catholic Australia is compared to the rest of the Anglosphere? Catholics are ~22% of the population, which doesn't sound like a lot but it's the single biggest group after "no religion" (many of whom would be lapsed Catholics).
like, the USA is a similar % Catholic but Protestantism is much stronger there. NZ is about 10% Catholic; the UK, 9%. Canada is a whole other situation because Catholicism is so tied to Francophones, but the primarily Anglophone provinces are 15-30% Catholic; so, comparable.
my own extended family are mostly Catholic – well, I say that but what I really mean is the people who are religious are mostly Catholic. most of my family aren't particularly religious. so, they're Catholic in the sense Australia is Catholic.
anyway i've just been thinking about this a lot since learning about the role of the Member for Footscray, Jack Mullens, in the 1955 ALP split. what a hectic guy honestly
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/172214590
if you've listened to #Underfoot3011 you may remember Mullens' attack on munitions unionist Moira James, the "Communist amazon...strong in physique, but doubtful in her femininity"
UPDATE: Catholics have been hacking the Census to downplay the prevalence of the heresy of syncretism https://twitter.com/hol_l_y/status/1296788194772492290
you can HAVE another religion alongside being Catholic that's what local saints are. you just can't SAY you have another religion
