[THREAD 1/5] A detail I took of one of Gorini's petrified heads. Many people ask me why petrifiers never revealed their obscure formulas, often taking the secret to their grave: in reality not everyone of them kept such a strict secrecy, but those who did had a good reason.
[2/5] Most petrifiers were self-taught anatomists. They developed their methods by working on animal specimens, and later experimented on unclaimed cadavers.
[3/5] Some of the most famous petrifiers hoped their work could be the key to being accepted within Universities, being appointed a Chair, awarded a professorship or even just a research grant. It would have been foolish of them to speak openly about their formulas.
[4/5] Allegedly some of these anatomists were still resenting the academic world for not letting them in, when they died.
But today there's no real "mystery" anymore: historians and paleoanthropologists have been able to unearth most of their methods.
[5/5] More info in my book "The Petrifier" about the incredible life & work of Paolo Gorini, published by @LogosEdizioni ni with beautiful photographs by @VanniniCarlo. (All my books have both English & Italian text).
