Just like with women, you cannot disentangle a gay man’s “likability” from his experiences navigating the world as a gay man. People’s bizarrely strong reactions to Pete are cut from the same cloth as people’s bizarrely strong reactions to female candidates. It is revealing.
I’ve written elsewhere—including my pinned thread—that queer people very often feel like outsiders. I’m thankful for people like Pete who have the fortitude to force their way into a place of high visibility. People like him make it easier for the rest of us to follow suit.
