The move to a new city and no friends, sent me on a tail spin, and I fell behind. The first exam when I scored low, got my dad to spend on ‘Rapidex’ the biggest scam in those days. The parcel arrived by post and I finished by the time dad came home. #AuthorBooksReading
Shocked he asked me to read it again, and answer questions on Sunday. Did it again. So he finally agreed to give me money to join a book lending library. ₹5 for the month and ₹15 as deposit. I finished reading 30 books/comics - Enid Blyton etc in 15 days. #AuthorBooksReading
Agarwal the book store owner was impressed and watched me over the next three months. Then offered me a deal: No monthly charges, can read unlimited books but Saturday I spend 3-4 hours at the shop when customers came. So I could recommend. Increase in sales #AuthorBooksReading
Soon the other two libraries on the same road caught on and came with same deal. Now I understood. So demanded ₹50 from each of them per month. AND I would put initials and grade on the books I read. And give 5 names which they put as recommended on a poster #AuthorBooksReading
I was 12-18 years old till this in some form worked. The Marwari would hoodwink me every couple of months and then I would learn. This also continued long past. Fast forward to first job with travel involved. Would buy, read and resell. #AuthorBooksReading
Moving to Calcutta got me hooked on buying books, travel and the allowances made it easy. Back to Bombay and Crossword happened. Love continued. There would be times when for a bom-del-bom trip I would carry 3 books to read. And in Delhi Salim at CP, #AuthorBooksReading
Would have 15-20 books on deal. Soon International travel allowed me to spend spend more time in Border and similar. Working for an industry where excess baggage was not an issue allowed me to bring back books. #AuthorBooksReading
Bought, read, reviewed for authors; Indian whom I met later etc. then came the kindle, and kindle unlimited which made life so good. Dad continued to read the large font hard copy till the last day before he passed. During the past 8 years #AuthorBooksReading
The love of reading still remains but consumption is scattered. Kindle unlimited expired and became expensive. Finally saw a great deal of 2 years on Kindle Unlimited USA so got my sister to gift it to me :) #AuthorBooksReading
During the past 8 years, Digital has put me in touch with many, many authors. I have received many a copies signed or otherwise. I have never asked or demanded a copy. BUT just as the author has to make money, reader has to buy so many books. #AuthorBooksReading
In such a scenario why don’t some of us readers jointly pool in and buy books - All unknown or known authors. Maybe ₹1000 per person and 25-30 joining together? Alternatively a limited reading code price online? Or @Librarywala_com can offer a solution #AuthorBooksReading
