So I got a little preview of what schools reopening are going to be like. My family has been keeping our bubble small and wearing masks indoors outside the house, but we decided to send my daughter (9yo) to ringette camp. We read the policies and thought acceptable risk
First day of camp goes well. But the next morning my daughter has a runny nose, so no camp, we keep her home and wait for other symptoms. She gets a fever and a cough. We decide to get her tested. Wife does as well because she also has mild symptoms.
We decided to segregate to different rooms while waiting for results. Mask on when I deliver food to them. Trying to minimize spread etc. Not so easy for my 6yo son. Kind of like a flashback to lockdown but worse.
I know some people (*cough* assholes) think covid is no big deal etc, only kills old people and people with pre-existing stuff, but I have a chronic condition that might increase my risk and I'd prefer not to roll that dice. So the waiting for results really sucks.
Also my daughter said the swap was the worst thing ever and I don't known if we'd be able to bribe her enough to do it again).
Thankfully we got my daughter's result back on the morning of day 2, negative, my wife got the result in the afternoon, also negative. All that hassle for a summer cold, but you kinda need too. We were lucky the turn around time on testing is so fast right now in Manitoba.
But this little scenario is likely going to play out for 1000s of families as school starts again, and it will not all be colds and flu, and I hope the testing capacity is up for it. I'm really having a hard time deciding if I should send my kids back.
The policies planned currently for schools is not as good as the ones for the ringette camp and the numbers are much bigger.
I don't really have anything hopeful to end on, I wish Manitoba had tried to copy Denmark as much as possible on the school reopening strategies. I am not looking forward to the fall...
