I don't expect political leaders to know everything about wildland fire. I do expect them to not be intentionally ignorant and to appreciate that the wildland firefighter community is exposed to increasing risks. 1/ https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1296541149507854337
I worked the Granite Mountain Hot Shot Memorial Service. Joe Biden spoke. At first, I was disappointed that President Obama would not be attending, but after a few minutes into Biden's speech, it was clear he was the one who needed to be there. 2/
Just listen from 3:00 on. To me, this will always be his best speech. He gets firefighters. He won't denigrate anyone and he won't let anything get in the way of doing what's right by the people fighting fires and those affected by them. 3/
The current president couldn't come close to this speech and we all know he would never even try. 4/
In wildland fire and emergency mgmt, we're supposed to be apolitical. We need that to connect to and inform ALL members of a community when danger is present and action is needed. But in this election, I think we have to take sides. It's been forced upon us. 5/
It's been forced upon us by the Puerto Rico response, by the capriciousness of other disaster responses, by the intentional harm of the border crisis, and by multiple statements of profound asininity like this one about wildfire. 6/
And of course, the big one: the often extortionate but mostly indifferent pandemic response. This administration doesn't understand wildland fire or any kind of emergency. They don't understand the people who go to work when disasters happen. 7/
They don't even understand the basics of government--the laws, tools, & people available to ease human suffering and help response and recovery. They don't care. I know a lot of folks in my line of work are upset. It should upset everyone.

I'm voting for @JoeBiden. 8/8
