So here are my thoughts on La Salle's decision to move online for the semester. I was going to write an oped explaining why the university should do this and publish it in the Collegian but it appears that is no longer necessary so here are my thoughts on Twitter. Thread 1/
Attempting to move students onto campus right now with the numbers going up across the country would have been incredibly dangerous and irresponsible. . The students. the faculty, their families and also the Olney community would have had their lives at risk. 2/
In person classes would have been tense and emotionally exhausting. Every time someone coughed or cleared their throat would have been followed by a tense pause and silence. Everyone would have been anxious and ready for the ball to drop. 3/
Not to mention, imagine going home after classes whether you're a commuter or a prof and wondering if you were getting your loved ones sick. No one would feel comfortable at all on campus or near others. It would be horrific experience. 4/
Also, I do want to talk about the community around La Salle. Let's be honest, the relationship between La Salle and the community can be tense. In the community's defense, given some of the stories I have heard, I don't blame them being frustrated with us. 5/
If there was an outbreak on campus it would no doubt spread through the community and threaten the lives and safety of the people of North Philadelphia. People with no connection to the university would suffer. 6/
I apologize for starting off on a grim note but I do want to end this on a positive note. All my Zoom classes were very well done this week. We were able to have meaningful discussions and talk to one another. 7/
I lit up with excitement when I saw my professor Monday morning and when I learned my friends were in the following class, I smiled the whole time. Online classes may not be ideal but it is possible to do them and do them well. 8/
There are a lot other things I could talk about. Some comments I have at how our government failed us. How the pursuit of profit screwed a lot of people over. But I think most of you know this already. So I'll just say stay safe and that you are loved and I am here for you. 9/
